UNFAVOURABLE FORMS OF BREASTS – SAGGY, LOOSE BREASTS

As we go through the aging process our breasts tend to lose volume and may even begin to sag. This sagging is usually characterized by nipples and aureola that are located too far down on the breasts. In addition, the nipples often point downwards.

TREATMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE FOR UNFAVOURABLE FORMS OF BREASTS – SAGGY, LOOSE BREASTS

Mastopexy (Breast lift)

Women who are happy with their volume of breast tissue, but feel they have sagging breasts are ideal candidates for a breast lift, otherwise known as a mastopexy. This procedure not only lifts your breasts, but also improve their shape. A breast lift can be performed under general or local anesthesia. However, there are different techniques that can be used to carry out the procedure, and this will largely determine where the incisions are made. These options should be discussed with your plastic surgeon before surgery, in order to identify the best option for you.The main objective of a breast lift is to relocate the nipple aureola complex to a higher position. If the aureola are too large, they are reduced to a more normal size. Whilst this is happening, the loose and excess skin in the lower part of the breast will be removed, resulting in a more youthful and perky breast shape and appearance.

The scars associated with this procedure are one that encircles the areola, a vertical scar that runs from the areola down the middle of the breast, and a short horizontal scar along the middle of the breast crease (the inframammary crease). These scars are essential in achieving positive results of the breast lift. However, in time they will fade and become inconspicuous. Most patients who undergo a breast lift end up feeling that the scars were well worth the benefit of regaining a youthful, attractive looking breast.

After Surgery

In order to protect the breasts, it is a requirement that the patient wears a soft cup bra for up to 4 weeks. The breasts will be swollen, bruised and painful, but with pain medication the pain will alleviate. Patients can resume activities within 3 to 5 days, but full recovery takes several weeks.
